8-Day Portugal Itinerary: Beaches, cities and memories that last a lifetime

Portugal had been on our travel list for a while, but what made this trip even more special was that it was a wedding gift from our godparents — and we took the journey together, making it even more unforgettable.

We traveled in mid September 2023, flying from Cluj-Napoca (Romania) to Lisbon, with a short layover in Charleroi, Belgium. During the stop, we even had time to grab a bite and explore the city center.

Day 1: Arrival in Lisbon

Upon landing in Lisbon, we spent one night in the city. After a good brunch and a morning walk through the charming streets, we caught a Flixbus heading south toward Faro.

Days 2–4: Faro & the Algarve Coast

In Faro, we rented a convertible (our first ever!) — a decision we couldn’t recommend more. With four of us traveling, this gave us the freedom to explore the southern coast without depending on buses or tours.

The Algarve was breathtaking. We visited some of the region’s most stunning beaches: Praia do Camilo, Praia da Marinha, Praia dos Três Castelos (home to the most unforgettable sunset!), Benagil Beach, Ponta da Piedade.

Every beach had its own magic, from dramatic cliffs to turquoise waters. We also made a stop in Albufeira, a lively town that definitely deserves a spot on your Algarve itinerary.

We indulged in seafood, shared stories by the sea, and made memories we’ll cherish forever. Algarve stole our hearts — and we’re already dreaming of returning.

Days 5 & 7: Lisbon, again (and loving it)

Back in Lisbon, we had a few days to dive into the city’s rhythm. We even set aside half a day for a “trash the dress” photoshoot — you can find more in this article!

Lisbon is vibrant, colorful, and full of charm. We explored many of its iconic sights: Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Miradouro de Santa Luzia, Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, Ascensor da Bica, Carmo Convent and more.

Wandering through Lisbon’s winding streets felt like stepping into a postcard — though be prepared for lots of uphill walking!

Food lovers, take note: Portuguese cuisine did not disappoint. We delighted ourselves with the Portuguese goodies, especially octopus, cod (bacalhau), and pastel de nata. I tried to taste as many bacalhau recipes as possible, considering that the Portuguese have 365 different recipes with this fish (one for each day of the year). I didn’t skip pastel de nata on any day, my favorite being one with dulce de leche (which instantly made me think of Brazil – one of my favorite countries).

Don’t miss Time Out Market — it’s got a great vibe and a huge variety of local and international dishes.

Day 6: A Quick Trip to Porto

Though Porto wasn’t part of the original plan, we decided last-minute to squeeze in a day trip — and we’re so glad we did. We caught an early Flixbus and returned around 10 PM after a full day of exploring.

Highlights included: Chapel of Souls, Livraria Lello (yes, the Harry Potter bookstore!), Luís I Bridge, Clérigos Tower.

We also enjoyed some amazing terrace views and experienced one of the most beautiful sunsets of the trip.

Day 8: A Fairytale Ending in Sintra

On our final day, we visited Sintra, a must-see if you’re staying in Lisbon. This magical town is home to castles, palaces, and lush gardens. Quinta da Regaleira was definitely our favorite attraction from Sintra.

Oh yes, I almost forgot about the wine — Portugal being one of the most renowned countries for wine, with two of the most popular being Vinho Verde and Porto wine — both absolute must-tries!

Portugal completely won us over — from its sun-kissed beaches to its historic cities, delicious food, and kind people. It’s now one of our favorite countries, and we’re already planning to come back and explore even more.

If you’re dreaming of a European escape full of contrast, color, and soul — Portugal is the place.
